Elwood Shaffer

On Wednesday, January 12,2022 at 5:07 PM, Elwood D. Shaffer,85, of Spring Township, received his wings and was granted his wish to be reunited with his wife -the love of his life – Darlene N. (Stech) Shaffer who passed away July 18,2018. Born in Reading on July 21,1936 Mr. Shaffer was the son of the late John E. and Emma C. (Rogers) Shaffer. He served in the United States Air Force, was formerly a bus driver for the Reading Bus Company, drove for several trucking companies the last being Damage Recovery Systems for 9 years until his retirement. He was known by many names: Elwood, Dad, Pop-Pop, Woody, Chub, Chubby and his wife called him “Hun”. He always enjoyed family get togethers as he was so very proud of the family he created. Mr. Shaffer is survived by his children Timothy L. Shaffer, husband of Lillian “Debbie” Shaffer of Birdsboro; Jeffery J. Shaffer, husband of Carol Shaffer of Shoemakersville; Douglas D. Shaffer, husband of Kathi Shaffer of Hamburg; Brenda L. Gelsinger, wife of David Gelsinger of Reinholds; Melanie Jo Hetrick, wife of Daniel Hetrick of Sinks Grove, WV. He is survived by his grandchildren: Travis, Stacey, Casey, Justin, Danelle, Kelli, Jared, Kristin, Alexa, Jade and Olivia; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson and his spoiled bunny rabbit named Butter.  He is also survived by his brothers David J. Shaffer of Reading and John E. Shaffer Jr, husband of Susan Shaffer of Flying Hills and his sister Nancy Ann Pezzino, wife of Donald Pezzino of Shillington. Mr. Shaffer was preceded in death by his son Troy Dan Shaffer in 1981, his daughter Carmela Jean Shaffer in 1998 and his great-grandson Oliver B. Kabakoff in 2017. Also, his siblings Richard L Shaffer, Donald Shaffer, John R. Shaffer and Fern Baus.

This is the day which the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Funeral Services will be held at the Bean Funeral Home, 129 East Lancaster Ave. Shillington on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2:00 PM. Reverend Merrill R. Marisseau will Officiate. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends at Bean Funeral Home Saturday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
