Betty Jane S. Schafer

Betty Jane (Sassaman) Schafer, age 97, of Reading, passed away June 2, 2023 at the Highlands of Wyomissing, where she had resided since 2017. Born in Reading, Betty was the daughter of Robert H. and Bertha H. (Good) Sassaman.  She was the wife of the late Ronald G. Schafer, who passed away in 1993.

Betty is survived by her daughter Diane Goldberg and son-in-law Jon Goldberg of New Hope, PA, and daughter-in-law Jayne Schafer of Lindenwold, NJ. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jonathan (Stephanie) Schafer, Emily (Kieran) Schafer, Sarah (Scott) Ellis, and Adam (Gabriela) Goldberg. She was also blessed with five great grandchildren: David, Annabel and Lucy Schafer, and Colin and Claire Ellis. Betty is also survived by her sister Shirley Ludwig of Ephrata.

She was predeceased by her son David A. Schafer and by her brothers Robert Sassaman, Jr. and Richard Sassaman.

Graveside services will be private and held at Spies-Zion Cemetery 310 Spies Church Road, Reading.
