Darrell N. Matz, 78, of Mount Penn, passed away Friday June 28, 2024 at 6:10 pm in his residence. He was the husband of Lisa S. (Samans) Matz. Born in West Reading, Mr. Matz was the son of the late Nevin and Sarah (Groh) Matz. He was a 1963 graduate of Mount Penn High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Transportation from Penn State University. Mr. Matz was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Penn and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was employed by the Department of Personnel at the United States Naval Ship Yard and Naval Base in Philadelphia for 40 years until his retirement. He was a member of the part time staff for the Reading and Northern Railroad Passenger Department joining the railroad in 1991. He worked nearly every position on the railroad, from car host, to brakeman, to conductor. Following his retirement as conductor Mr. Matz became one of the legendary voices of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. In addition to his wife of 30 years, Mr. Matz is survived by his sister Phyllis M. Koch wife of Donald L. Koch of Wernersville, niece Iris K. Lis wife of Russell J. Lis of Wernersville, nephew Stuart A. Koch husband of Linda Koch of Port Royal, Virginia and his great nephew Nathan P. Lis.
Funeral Service will be held at Bean Funeral Home 3825 Penn Ave. Sinking Spring, Friday, July 5, 2024 at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery.
