Dennis J. Nagle, 83, of Muhlenberg Township, died peacefully at home after a brief illness. He passed in the arms of his beloved wife, Nancy.
He was the husband of Anna R. “Nancy” (Eagan) Nagle. They were married at Holy Guardian Angels Church on January 23, 1960. Dennis was born in Reading and was the son of the late Leo J. and Violet L. (Clay) Nagle. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Laureldale.
Dennis is leaving this earth to be with his son, Douglas C. Nagle, who passed in 2014. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughter Theresa L. “Tracy” Newman, wife of Gregory, Nazareth, PA. Dennis has five grand-children. Douglas Nagle, who is married to Edith, Kyle Newman, Heather Nagle, Corey Newman, and Connor Newman. He was a regular fixture at their sporting events, theater and dance performances, and academic ceremonies for over twenty years.
He was also the great-grandfather to Tristen Hopkins, Raynor and Damon Nagle, sons of Doug; Peyton Newman, daughter of Connor; Zora Walker, daughter of Heather; and Miles Newman, son of Kyle. Dennis always maintained that grandchildren are God’s blessing to older folks, and he felt incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to love and cherish his grandchildren and to be able to see them mature into adulthood. His blessings were magnified as he was able to share his love for his great-grandchildren.
Dennis was a devoted brother to his sister, Linda of Austin, TX, wife of the late Robert Lamp and caring brother-in-law and friend to the late Theresa and Roy DeLay of Fleetwood. He cherished his role as “Uncle Den” to nephews Roy DeLay, husband of Karen, Michael DeLay, husband of Janice, and Michael Lamp and nieces Michele Schoener, wife of Scott, Wendy Lamp, and Lisa Brown and their families. He was predeceased by his niece, Loreen (Lamp) Garrett.
Dennis graduated from Reading High School in 1958 and attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and Albright College. He completed advanced management programs at the Edison Electric Institute, University of Michigan and Harvard Business School.
Dennis served in the U.S. Army’s 716th MP Battalion.
Mr. Nagle began his business career at the Wyomissing Corporation and was introduced to the computer field in 1962. He joined Met-Ed/General Public Utilities in 1968 and progressed through a number of positions, ultimately retiring as Vice President-Information Services in 1991. In addition to his leadership role within the GPU System, Dennis also participated in several industry and community forums. He served as national chairman of the Edison Electric Institute’s Information System’s Committee, the IBM Customer Advisory Council for the utility industry and was one of six representatives selected to participate in the first utility industry US/Japan computer exchange program held in Kyoto, Japan in 1978.
Locally, Dennis served on the executive board of the Hawk Mountain Council Boy Scouts of America, the Board of Trustees of Alvernia University, the Customer Advisory Board of the First National Bank of Leesport and participated in numerous United Way campaigns.
Dennis was an avid sports fan and cheered for his Phillies and Eagles to his final days. He saw his first Eagles game at Shibe Park in 1948 and still remembered most of the Eagles starting players from that era. As an adult, Dennis developed a passion for golf and for more than forty years was a fixture at Gasser’s Driving Range. Over the years Dennis was a member of the Berkshire, Reading, Heidelberg and Golden Oaks Golf Clubs. While he sought the perfect golf swing (though he never found it), the challenge and comradery of the game had him hooked!
