Dorothy Joan Knittle, 89, of Robeson Township, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Fairlane Gardens, Exeter Township. She was the wife of the late Harry George Knittle, Jr., who passed away May 29, 2025, and to whom she was married for 68 years.
Born on July 27, 1936, in Pottsville, Mrs. Knittle was the daughter of the late Donald C. and Mildred (Goodman) Hill. She was a 1954 graduate of Pottsville High School and faithfully attended reunions. Mrs. Knittle was employed as a cafeteria worker at Firestone Tire in Pottstown and in housekeeping at Pottstown Hospital until her retirement in 1997.
Dottie was always the life of the party and was an avid sports fan. She loved watching the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, 76ers, and tennis. She also enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo, going to the casino, and trips to New York wineries, Canada, and cruise to the Bahamas. Mrs. Knittle was also a cub scout den mother and a member of the PTA.
She is survived by her 9 children, among whom there are 3 sets of twins: Harry George Knittle, III, husband of Lori Knittle, of Pottstown; Sandra Jean Ostroski, wife of Joe Ostroski, of Camp Hill; Joan Marie Schaeffer, wife of Jeff Schaeffer, of Douglassville; David Alan Knittle, husband of Pam Knittle, of Pottstown; Karin L. Small of Birdsboro; Donald Gary Knittle, husband of Sutjit Knittle, of St. Augustine, Florida; Susan Linda Brower, wife of Ted Brower, of Birdsboro; Claire Ellen Antrim-Mayberry of Pottstown; Christine Louise Johnston, wife of Robert Johnston, of Lansdale; and her 21 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Mrs. Knittle is also survived by her siblings, Eileen Comose of Bensalem; Mary Helen Bristow of Philadelphia, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Wayne W. Hill, Sr.; Merle “Bud” Hill; Robert E. “Jim” Buday; Eugene R. “Beanie” Buday.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bean Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 129 East Lancaster Ave., Shillington, on Tuesday August 4, 2026 at 11:30 am. Amy S. Landis, Celebrant, will officiate. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at Bean Funeral Homes & Crematory Tuesday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in memory of Mrs. Dorothy Joan Knittle.
