It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Larry Robert Schmidt, a devoted husband to Cheryl Ann Schmidt for 55 years, loving father, proud grandfather, brother, cherished friend, and lifelong educator, who passed away on May 14th 2026.
Larry dedicated his life to serving others through education, kindness, patience, and an unwavering love for his family. His impact extended far beyond the classroom and the communities he served, leaving a lasting legacy of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Larry was born on May 16, 1948 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Muhlenberg High School and Ursinus College. As a newlywed, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves and bravely served his country.
Following his passion for education, Larry began his teaching career within the Schuylkill Valley School District and then as the Athletic Director and the Junior High Principal within the Conrad Weiser Area School District. While devotedly raising his family with his wife and working full-time, Larry achieved one of his proudest accomplishments - earning his Doctorate of Education degree from Lehigh University.
Larry served the Conrad Weiser community from 1978 - 2002. His time at Conrad Weiser also included serving as the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.
In 2010, Larry finished his 39th year in education after serving as the Superintendent of the Palmyra School District for 8 years.
After retiring, Larry and Cheryl embraced the next chapter of their lives, living their dream on Hilton Head Island, where they enjoyed the beauty and peace of island living. Larry spent his days golfing, socializing with friends, and making lasting memories with his family including pool days, delivering drinks pool-side, making his favorite recipes, and cart rides with his grandchildren while ‘hunting’ for gators.
A private family celebration will be held to honor Larry’s legacy.
Given Larry’s passion and lifelong dedication to education, in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Total Experience Learning Institute at Alvernia University. 400 Saint Bernadine Street, Reading PA 19607.
Additionally, the family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who cared for Larry through his end of life journey. Their compassion, dedication, guidance, and kindness brought comfort and support not only to Larry, but to his entire family. Special appreciation is given to those who helped ensure his final days were filled with dignity, peace, and comfort while surrounded by his family.
