Dr. Shirls Clunk

Dr. Shirls J. Clunk, 97, of Reading passed away Saturday October 11, 2008 at 4:28 pm in his residence of natural causes. He was the husband of the late Helen M. (Miller) Clunk who passed away April 12, 1997 and the late Sallie Gale(Smeck) Clunk who passed away October 1, 2001. Born in Franklin, PA he was the son of the late Dr. Harvie M. and Grace L. (Rohrich) Clunk. Dr. Clunk had his optometric practice at 532 Walnut Street in Reading for over 50 years and retired in 1982.He was a veteran of WWII serving with the Marine Corp. and was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church.Dr. Clunk was a graduate of West Reading High School in 1929 and attended Albright College and was a graduate of Penna. College of Optometry in 1933 and was a member of Phi Theta Epsilon. Dr. Clunk was a Fellow of National Eye Research Foundation, Life member of Penna. Optometric Association, Berks County Optometric Associaiton and American Optometric Association. He served as Chairman of Professional Committee, Berks County Association for the Blind and a member of the association for 50 years. He served 3 times as president, secretary and vice president of Berks County Optometric Societies,; former member of Marine Corp. League and a member of Toastmaster's International Club, 714 for 40 years. Dr. Clunk was a well know railroader. He is survived by his step son Don R. husband of Helen(Binkley)Fink of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland and grandchildren Margaret Maddock; D. Roger Fink; Alec Fink; Jay Fink; Randal Fink; and Patrick Fink along with 11 great grandchildren.
