Gene Sayers, Sr., 76, of Muhlenberg Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Reading Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Ruth Ann (Stratton) Sayers, with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage in 2025.
Born in Reading, Gene was the son of the late Clinton Sayers, Sr. and Janet (Kennedy) Sayers and a proud graduate of Reading High School.
Gene was a skilled cabinet maker and instructor, dedicated to teaching others through his talents. He was also an active member of Faith Evangelical Congregational Church in Temple. Gene was a man of deep faith, which carried him through many challenges and joys. He participated in several mission trips to Ecuador, West Virginia, and Hawaii, combining his faith and his talented craftsmanship, building church buildings and creating beautiful furniture to support communities in need.
Gene also shared his lifelong love of trains through his volunteer work at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, where he enjoyed giving tours and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm.
More than anything, Gene treasured his role as grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially cheering on his grandson. He could often be found at music events, sporting events, and special milestones, including seeing his grandson, Jackson’s, first solo flight.
In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his children Gene R. Sayers, Jr., husband of Anna M. Sayers of Royersford; Traci L. Pawling, wife of Brian R. Pawling of Oley; grandson Jackson H. Pawling; and his step grandchildren Christopher and Kaleigh White.
He was preceded in death by his brother Clinton Sayers, Jr. and his sister Carol Sayers.
Gene will be remembered for his strong faith, craftsmanship, and devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the work he built, and the memories shared by those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Evangelical Congregational Church 400 North Temple Blvd. Temple Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 9:45AM. Reverend Brett Kindig will officiate. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive relatives and friends at Faith Evangelical Congregational Church from 9:00 AM to 9:30AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of the Railroad Museum PO Box 125, Strasburg, PA 17579, www.rrmuseumpa.org, in memory of Mr. Eugene Robert Sayers, Sr.
