Herbert A. "Herb" Wetzel, 75 of St. Lawrence, passed away October 4, 2010 at 3:22 pm surrounded by his loving family following a long battle with melanoma. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Patricia Ann(Donegan)Wetzel. Born in Gettysburg, he was the son of the late Dale and Mary(Spence)Wetzel. He was a graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1957 graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Agronomy and received a masters degree of Extension Education in 1981. He was employed by the Pennsylvania State University in 1957 as an Extension AGent working in Delawre and Northampton Counties before transferring to Berks County in 1961 where he served until his retirement in 1993. He was a Senior Extension Agent and Berks County Extension Agent. He wrote columns for the Reading Eagle newspaper and the Berks-Lehigh farmer magazine. After retirement he served as an Associate Director for the Berks County Conservation District and Director and Vice President of the SE PA Resource and Conservation Development Council. He was a member of Pennsylvania Association of County Agricultural Agents and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and received the Distiguished Service Award from NACAA. He served in the United States Army during peacetime and obtained the rank of Captain and was Company Commander of Battery A. in Easton. Mr. Wetzel was a member of St. Catharine of Siena RCC and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, David A. husband of Tiffany D. Wetzel of Oley and Robert D. Wetzel husband of Neha Patel of Decatur, Georgia along with his grandchildren Matthew S. Wetzel and Erin E. Berstler. He is also survived by his sisters Marie wife of Joseph Paolucci of Brookhaven, PA, Carol Wetzel of Wilmington, DE and Jane Wetzel of Cashtown, PA.
