Shirley Ann Iglesias passed away July 13, 2025 in Reading, PA. She was born October 23, 1946, in Ann Arbor, MI, the daughter of Nicholas and Carol (Smith) Graganta.
Growing up, Shirley enjoyed family vacations to northern Michigan and trips to Detroit with her sister for plays, concerts, and shopping. She was a member of the First Methodist Church. Shirley played piano and sang in the choir at Ann Arbor High School. Following graduation, she attended Jackson Community College and Washtenaw Community College.
Shirley was a follower of Broadway theatre, happenings in Greenwich Village, and the art scene in 1960s New York. This led her to move to New York City where she met her future husband, Raymond Iglesias. Shirley was an executive secretary with the Hospital League / Local 1199 Training and Upgrading Fund, retiring after 19 years.
Shirley and Ray relocated from Brooklyn, NY, to Reading where they bought and sold at flea markets and auctions and operated an eBay store in the early days of online selling. Shirley also managed the couple’s rental properties and produced several subscription publications including The Collectibles Newsletter and Shirley’s Helps & Hints.
Shirley survived a devastating stroke in 2016, just months after her husband’s passing. She had a powerful will to live and bounced back repeatedly. As a resident of Pathways at Country Meadows of Wyomissing, she was recognized for her active participation in volunteer activities to benefit women and military personnel. She enjoyed art, cooking, church, conversation and laughter with fellow residents and staff.
Shirley valued continuous learning. She was a voracious reader of mysteries and biographies. She excelled in trivia competitions and never missed an episode of Jeopardy. Shirley had a quick wit and quirky sense of humor. She was very proud of her Filipino American heritage.
Shirley is survived by her sister Sharon Graganta (Chelsea, MI); stepson Louis Iglesias (Matthews, NC) and his children Tyler (New York, NY), Louis Jr. (Wilmington, NC), and Layla (Boone, NC); several cousins; and good friend Bill Sands (Leesport, PA). She will be remembered by residents and staff at Complete Care at Berkshire, Columbia Cottage of Wyomissing, and Country Meadows of Wyomissing.
Shirley was deeply concerned about the welfare of animals, including her many beloved cats, most of whom she rescued. Contributions in her memory may be made to Humane Pennsylvania at humanepa.org.
