Donald “Sonny” J. Hummel, Jr., 77, of Mohnton, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Donald J. Hummel, Sr. and June (Vogel) Hummel. Sonny was the husband of Linda A. (Richardson) Hummel, together they shared 21 years of marriage. For 34 years he was a Machinist at the former Rockwell International of Wyomissing before his retirement in 1999. Sonny was a past Fire Chief at the former Rockwell International and served as Union Grievance Committeeman for Local #6996 from 1991 to 1999. He played semi-professional football for two years as a tackle for the Reading Keystones from 1963 to 1964. Sonny loved to go to his cabin that he built in the mountains to hunt, fish, and enjoy nature. He also enjoyed his yearly bass fishing trips to Canada. After his retirement, Sonny and his wife, Linda loved to go on cruises and travel throughout the United States.
In addition to his wife, Linda, Sonny is survived by his children, Darren G. Hummel, of Robesonia and Shelley L. (Hummel) Herman, wife of Robert of Exeter Township. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Chelsey, Ashley, and Amber, his great grandchildren, Alicia, Nolan, and Sophia, and his brothers, Robin S. Hummel, husband of Elinor of Virginia Beach and Kerry D. Hummel, husband of Marian of Spring Township.
Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 in Bean Funeral Homes, 129 E. Lancaster Ave., Shillington at 12:00 pm, Celebrant Amy Landis will officiate. The family will receive friends and relatives from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, April 19, 2021 in Bean Funeral Homes, Shillington. Interment will follow services at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
