Dorothy ‘Laura” Matz, 101, of Douglassville passed away on Friday January 8, 2021 at Amity Place in Douglassville. Born in Ridley Park PA, Dorothy was the daughter of the late William and Laura (Dauth) Matz.

Ms. Matz is survived by four generations of nieces and nephews, who loved listening to her stories and spending time with her. She was preceded in death by four brothers: William, James, George and John and five sisters: Gertrude Resch, Louisa Frederick, Caroline Albright, Florence Miller, and Agnes Hilbert. Dorothy graduated from Boyertown High school in 1936 and Strayer College in Washington DC. She proudly served in the US Navy for 21 years, enlisting during World War II. Her service included being stationed in Hawaii, Guam and Australia. While serving in the Navy, she worked in the Pentagon and for J.A.G. In 1951 she was one of five WAVES selected and transferred to Paris, France to serve on the staff of General Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE). She represented the United States in the raising of the SHAPE flag. Miss Matz also worked in Washington DC on Capitol Hill for seven years as personal secretary for Senator Tidings of Maryland and administrative assistant for the Watergate Committee. She was a research assistant for Congressman Butts of Texas and Congressman Heflet of Hawaii. In 1979, she was selected by the Professional Secretaries Association as secretary of the year for Delaware, Maryland & Washington DC. Miss Matz was listed in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.” She was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association and of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association.

She was loved and will be missed by her nieces and nephews, the staff at Amity Place and her night time caregivers from Chestnut Knoll at Home.

A funeral service will be held in Bean Funeral Home, 6 Fairlane Road Exeter Township, Wednesday January 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Charles Evans Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in Bean Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society at:   https://donate3.cancer.org/
