Edith (Katsoff) Mendelsohn peacefully passed away on March 17, 2021 at the age of 103 in her home at Manor at Market Square, where she has lived happily for the last twenty years. She was born on July 22, 1917 in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1935. Edith was the daughter of Lena Malinsky and Simon Katsoff. She married Milton Mendelsohn of Reading on June 11, 1939 and lived in Reading for the rest of her life.
Her business career included being an Office Manager of the former Jewish Community Center, Bookkeeper at the former J.E. Tobacco Co., and Clerk at the former American Bank.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Milton, her daughter, Susan, her son, James, and her daughter-in-law, Susan. She is survived by her grandchildren, Judith, Beth, and Daniel (Jasmine), her son-in-law, Michael (Eleanor), and her great granddaughters, Quin and Mira, in addition to many nieces, nephews, and friends all who adored her.
Edith enjoyed being with family and friends as well as knitting (especially for new babies whether she knew the parents or not), sewing and her favorite hobby, duplicate bridge. She played in local, regional, and shipboard tournaments. Edith was a member of the Congregation Oheb Sholom, the American Contract Bridge Association, and the Hadassah.
Ironically, Edith died on St. Patty’s Day, perhaps to tell us to have an enjoyable time with family and friends while remembering her and her life. She didn’t want a funeral but instead for everyone to have a good time while remembering her. In lieu of flowers to the family, contributions may be made to Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, 555 Warwick Drive, Wyomissing, PA 19610, in honor of Edith Mendelsohn. Bean Funeral Homes, Sinking Spring, is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made to www.beanfuneralhomes.com.
