West Lawn

Ronald C. Bender, 73, of West Lawn, passed away on January 16, 2021 at Reading Hospital following complications from pre-existing conditions. Ron was born on September 13, 1947 in Lancaster to the late Charles K. and Arlene M. (Burky) Bender. He was the step-son of the late Theresa M. Bender, whom he adored.

Ron was preceded in death by the one true love of his life, Lorraine “Rainie” F. Bender. His heart was broken the day she passed and he never fully recovered. Ronald is survived by two sons, Ronald C. Bender, II, Christopher C. Bender married to Brenda (Strouse) Bender; one daughter, Tiffany (Bender) Smithson married to John W. Smithson; two granddaughters, Alexia C. Bender, Parker R. Smithson; and one grandson, Chase P. Smithson.  Also surviving are his sisters: Shirlene, married to Paul Oberholtzer of Elizabethtown, and Judy, married to Jeffrey Kreider of Manheim; and beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one sister, Bonita, married to the late H. Dean Stengel of Lititz.

Ron attended Hempfield High School in Landisville. He also proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army. Ron was known as a provider and the hardest working of men, working as a skilled laborer throughout his life. In his younger years he worked as a farmhand, and later he worked as a welder for Conrail Railroad, a welder for Dana Corporation, a truck driver for FT Silfies Inc., and most recently before his death, a courier driver for his nephew.

Ron was a faithful Philadelphia Eagles fan and enjoyed watching football most of all sports. He would never turn down the opportunity to go fishing or to tell the tales of those trips.  He was a man of few words but he always enjoyed the comforting presence of family, friends, and neighbors.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the convenience of family and friends later in the year.   Bean Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made at www.beanfuneralhomes.com.
